Make Deliberate Choices

Intentionally choose how to use time. Time can be used pouring out your strengths, passions, skills, and values, and not be wasted. Our choices can make it such so choose wisely.

1- Know Your Priorities- For least resistance align priorities based on who you are. What is really important to you? List 3-5 top priorities in order. Look at them daily. What goals are most important right now for long-term fulfillment?

2- Be Aware of Time Bandits- Monitor how you spend time for 24-72 hours. Notice where time is wasted or how it can be put to better use. EX: Run errands once a week versus daily trips. Notice distracters, those things that steal your focus such as phone calls, e-mail, things breaking down, etc.

3- Set your Mind on the Ultimate Result- Thoughts guide behavior. Focus negatively, and you may get discouraged and quit. The Wright Brothers focused on the end result, ‘what it takes to fly’, not being grounded. Choose your line of thought or your brain will take a shortcut and choose the thought pattern/ habit that is in place, whether or not it serves you. It is a choice! You can accept or reject a thought. Choose a positive, results-aimed mind set always!

Develop Great Habits and a Structure to Support Your Actions

Many people are busy, but without the structure and habits in place to get the results they crave. Know that great habits with structure support you to complete primary tasks. You then get results which lead to more freedom to do what you want (without the fear or guilt).

4- Have an Efficient Scheduling System- Whether using a pda, home computer, or a planner, it is critical to have a structure that supports your planning style. 5- Schedule Priorities First, Block Time, and Take Action- Block time for priorities first, then follow through. Focus on how great you will feel after doing it. Block time for various roles and avoid multi-tasking to maintain focus. Do not do housework during business hours. Set yourself up for success by scheduling high energy tasks when you have energy and low energy tasks later. Stay fully focused to complete priorities with excellence. Give full attention to one activity at a time.

6- Set Time Limits- Set a time limit when you begin a task then stay focused. This takes practice. Most tasks take longer than we anticipate, but it will save time. Most of us could waste plenty of time on e-mail, but can save a lot when we set a limit.

7- Plan a Day Ahead- For most, each day is different. It helps to plan your schedule the day/evening before. Then you can jump out of bed in the morning with a smile on because you know exactly what to do.

8- Create Daily Habits that Serve You- What daily action would make the greatest positive difference? Examples: Spiritual studies, go to bed or wake up earlier, watch less tv, read, make three new contacts, drink more water, do something you love, limit time for e-mail, write, organize, plan, create, help others, etc. Make it specific. Ask which daily habits uplift you and which hold you back then make a shift.

Be in Action on What is Most Important

Reaching goals means taking the steps that get you there… no matter what. You are either interested or committed. Life will get in the way. Fear will want to hold you back. It is a choice to continue in action on the important stuff, and rewards come when you do.

9- Do It, Delegate It, or Dump It- It is easier to stay in action on priorities when you leverage your strengths, passions, values, and skills. Learn in action and gain experience. Delegate what is not your cup of tea. Dump what is not that important right now. Block time to handle tolerations that drain your energy such as clutter, repairs, etc.

10- Simplify and Systematize- Put systems in place to make things easier. Consistently seek the more efficient way. EX: position employees to leverage their strengths/ passions, run errands weekly when stores are low traffic, when you buy something get rid of something to avoid clutter, organize the office at the end of each day, give everything a home so nothing is ever lost. Strive for efficiency.

Seven new super-microscopes and a specially designed building will give scientists at DTU unique opportunities to design new materials. Among the areas that will benefit are the environment, manufacturing, energy and transport.

One of the total of seven new microscopes is the almost four-metre-high ‘Environmental Transmission Electron Microscope’, developed in association with DTU by world-leading microscope manufacturer FEI Company. It is the most powerful of its type in the world.

“With this newly developed microscope, we will be able to see atomic-level details, in the future also in 3D. The magnification is so great that a human hair would appear as broard as a soccer field.

“We expect to be able to observe with a resolution of 0.07 nanometres – half the size of a carbon atom,” says Dr Rafal E. Dunin-Borkowski, Director of DTU CEN.

According to Dr Dunin-Borkowski, this will be a giant step forward, for example in the field of materials research, with scientists being able to see what happens to individual atoms when they make changes in materials and give them new properties.

“That applies to aluminium and magnesium alloys, building materials, and more. These are new materials able to change the course of society in areas such as communication, energy, transport and electronics,” adds Dr Dunin-Borkowski.

Special building to protect delicate apparatus

DTU’s microscopes are special because they will be the first commercial microscopes allowing 100 per cent compensation for errors in the electromagnetic lenses.

The lenses cannot be made error-free, and therefore the great challenge was error-correction. In collaboration with FEI Company, this has been successfully achieved. Measurements already show that the combination of the new microscopes and the new building has created the best microscopy facility in the world.

“As the global leader in ultra-high resolution and innovative solutions for electron microscopy, we have been working closely with our partners at DTU,” says Don Kania, CEO & President of FEI Company. “Our ability to collaborate with customers, delivering the most advanced electron microscopes coupled with proven applications expertise, has demonstrated itself with great success in the realization of DTU CEN”.

DTU’s Center for Electron Nanoscopy (DTU CEN) owes its creation to a large donation from the A.P. Møller and Chastine Mc-Kinney Møller Foundation for General Purposes.The large donation from the Foundation made possible not only the creation of DTU CEN, but also the construction of a very special building to protect the microscopes from vibration, fluctuations in temperature, and electromagnetic noise.

Even the smallest vibration would blur the image when working with very high resolutions. The temperature within the building must not vary by more than a tenth of a degree, otherwise it could cause the microscope itself to expand or contract. And electromagnetic fields would interfere with the microscopes’ technology.

Iranian police have closed down 24 Internet cafes and other coffee shops in as many hours, detaining 23 people, as part of a broad crackdown on immoral behavior in the Islamic state, official media said on Sunday.The action in Tehran province was the latest move in a campaign against fashion and other practices deemed incompatible with Islamic values, including women flouting strict dress codes and barber shops offering men Western hair styles.

“Using immoral computer games, storing obscene photos … and the presence of women wearing improper hijab were among the reasons why they have been closed down,” Colonel Nader Sarkari, a provincial police commander, said.

Since Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won the presidency in 2005, promising a return to the values of the 1979 Islamic revolution, hardliners have pressed for tighter controls on “immoral behaviour”.

Sarkari told the official IRNA news agency that police had inspected 435 coffee shops in the past 24 hours, and 170 had been warned.

The report did not make clear whether they were all Internet cafes, which have mushroomed in Iran over the past few years and are popular especially among young people. Police were not immediately available for comment.

“Twenty-three people were detained,” Sarkari said, adding 11 of them were women.

Many young Iranians are avid users of the Internet, some using chat rooms to socialise with the opposite sex. Mingling between sexes outside marriage is banned and many Web sites considered unIslamic are blocked by the authorities.

The cafe crackdown coincides with a winter campaign against women wearing tight trousers tucked into long boots and other “improper dress” such as short overcoats and hats instead of scarves.

Enforcement of Islamic dress codes that require women to cover their hair and disguise the shape of their bodies has become stricter since 2005, following eight years of reformist rule.

Police regularly clamp down on skimpier clothing and looser headscarves in the summer, but usually for only a few weeks. This year the campaign has run into the winter.

Women found dressing inappropriately may be warned and repeat offenders can be taken to a police station and fined.

“Our people want their women to be able to go in the streets with respect and want their dignity to be protected,” senior Iranian cleric Ahmad Khatami told worshippers in Tehran on Friday. “Our people want the society to be morally clean.”

In a separate campaign, IRNA said police had inspected 275 restaurants in the capital to check compliance with a new ban on smoking in public places. The ban includes water pipes, known in Iran as qalyan, offered in some outlets.

Of those, 138 received a warning and 17 were shut down, police official Mohammad Reza Alipour said.

Western Digital has built a new range of drives with software that limits the user’s ability to share files

The company ships a range of My Book drives with software called Anywhere Access. This is designed to enable PC users to access their files from a network. Western Digital has applied a huge quantity of digital rights restriction technology to prevent users of the drives sharing unauthorized files, including music and video clips.

While Anywhere Access software currently only works with Windows systems, Western Digital’s actions could have ramifications across the computer industry. Western Digital is the world’s second largest hard-drive manufacturer, after Seagate. Most of the world’s hard drives are built by just a handful of companies.

Unfortunately, the implementation of the technology to protect copyright also sees sharing of popular file formats completely restricted - even if the files to be shared are created by users themselves.

When announced, the company trumpeted Anywhere Access as, “simplifying access to digital content and breaking the barriers of physical proximity to that content.”

It allowed users with compatible drives to access content held on that drive remotely over the internet, or at least, that’s what was promised.

Western Digital declared its software would: “Enable friends and family to share digital content such as photos and documents anywhere in the world without the hassle or insecurity of having to upload it to a third-party site.”

Not so. The restricted solution forbids access to 30 different file formats, mainly video and music formats.

Digital activists say it is the latest step in a so-called war on copyright theft that is damaging consumer rights, the BBC reports. Peter Brown of the Free Software Foundation told the BBC: “DRM is bad for society because it attempts to monitor what we do and how we live our digital lives. It is asking us to give up control of something which gives us some degree of democracy, freedom and the ability to communicate with a large group of people.”

Smashing Ideas, a developer of digital media, and Cartoon Network have announced a strategic partnership for the development and distribution of multiple Cartoon Network mobile games, animated screensavers and wallpapers.

Smashing Ideas will distribute the jointly-created Cartoon Network content across North America through carriers supporting Flash Lite content. The first deployment is a games channel consisting of two games on Smashing Idea’s Brew application, ‘Smashing Games.’

Ross Cox, senior director of advanced platforms at Cartoon Network New Media, said: “We are very proud to partner with Smashing Ideas in the creation of a branded games channel that is the first of its kind in mobile gaming. Our games channel extends the type of immersive gaming experience our fans expect from Cartoon Network onto the mobile platform and serves as a launching pad for groundbreaking original titles created in Flash Lite.”
