Prof says computers must learn to “forget”

The rise of fast processors and cheap storage means that remembering, once incredibly difficult for humans, has become simple. Viktor Mayer-Schönberger, a professor in Harvard’s JFK School of Government, argues that this shift has been bad for society, and he calls instead for a new era of “forget fulness.”

      One ancient term for this is “forgive and forget”, and it has been applied online for a long time, and has become endemic to many systems already. For example, many corporations shred paper and delete electronic archives after seven years for instance. Privacy laws today also require destruction of data upon request.

      From an ethical point of view, it makes sense to me. The contrary option is something like David Brin’s “The Transparent Society”.

      A good reason to not use your real name when making comments on web sites. Especially if you’re young. You’ll look back, roll your eyes at your own comments, and hope no one else sees them.
