MAKE’s recent Strategic Modernization Roadmap (SMR) helped Alberta Ministry of Environment to clarify goals, document their current legacy application portfolio, and facilitate dialog between the IT and business sides of the organization.

Vancouver, BC (PRWEB) August 19, 2008 — MAKE’s recently-completed Strategic Modernization Roadmap (SMR) engagement with Alberta Ministry of Environment (Alberta Environment) is helping to synchronize and stimulate both Information Technology (IT) and organizational transformation.

Public sector IT departments know they need to modernize their legacy system portfolios to better support the business operations of government. They are burdened with software applications written decades ago that are fragile, difficult and costly to modify or enhance in order to support rapidly changing needs and legislative changes. And the challenges are not entirely technological — in many cases the inflexible nature of the legacy applications have, over many years, been reflected in the human attitudes and relationships between the business and IT domains within government.

In his case, Alberta Environment CIO Roger Burns has found that not only did the SMR help to clarify the way forward for IT transformation, but it has become a catalyst in helping the business and IT parties get behind a common effort that is important to the future effectiveness of Ministry operations.

“The Ministry has long recognized the need for both IT and Business transformation. The challenge has been getting both sides to speak the same language,” Roger Burns explained. “We discovered that by going through MAKE’s SMR process, which begins with an interview round with the key stakeholders, we were able to relate to each other in new and constructive ways that would have been difficult without an independent third-party leading the conversations.”

“Although it may seem somewhat obvious or trivial on first blush,” Burns continues, “getting everyone on the same page, strategically and tactically, was key. And I’m sure many CIOs would agree that this is not easy to do. As we worked through the goals, plans and realities of our organization together, coupled with the deep technical analysis of our existing IT applications and infrastructure that the MAKE team provided, we were able to come up with a strategic and realistic roadmap that is supported by the key stakeholders, including the Executive team. Furthermore, the educational component that MAKE has woven throughout their SMR process made it all happen more easily.”

Alberta Environment is now on track to issue Request for Proposals (RFPs) to modernize their legacy systems and move forward in their plans for Business transformation enabled by IT transformation.
